Should I choose a self-catered or catered option for my winter skiing holidays in euro-land? There really is no question!
Initially I thought, as I think most of us would, that going self-catered was the only answer for a much needed credit crunch winter holiday, we can surf the net, choose a nice chalet, drive down to the alps with our friends and have a great skiing holiday.
Lets look at the facts: Our requirements were, a large luxury chalet for 10 people, 5 bedrooms each with en-suite bathroom plus garden hot-tub, for the week commencing 06 Feb 2010.
First I looked at a self-catered chalet as above, in the mountain resort of Chatel, in the Porte's du Soleil ski area of France. Price was 4500 euro for the chalet for 7 days accommodation, not a bad price of 450 euro per person for top quality accommodation in a peak week.
Next, identical accommodation requirements, in the same resort, but a catered chalet holiday. The price for this came in at 7300 euro, wow, that's a lot, but is it? Lets break it down....
Self-catered option was 450 euro per person per week
Catered option was 730 euro per person
A difference of 280 euro per person per week, divide this by 7 days and we get 40 euro per person per day difference.
What do we get for 40 euro per day? We get picked up from the airport in a private minibus, taken to the ski hire shop en-route to our chalet, pre dinner drinks and canapés are served in front of a roaring log fire before freshly prepared 3 course dinners with a range of complimentary fine wines, add to this breakfasts, afternoon teas, minibus shuttle services to and from the ski slopes and village plus daily cleaning and generally being well looked after... for 40 euro a day, No driving, no carrying skis, no shopping, no cooking, no washing up, no expensive restaurants, the list goes on.
There really is only one option.
