America's debt is in the trillions????????????and yet, like those who worry about borrowing five dollars but not about their unaffordable mortgage, Americans fail to pay attention to this serious situation. The press hovers over annual budgets and the associated deficits (and rare surpluses), but pays little attention to the national debt and even less to the interest spent serving it. Federal politicians seem as powerless to control the debt as they are uninformed about its nature. After tracing fluctuations in the finances of the country from its beginning until 1940, this book examines the administrations of the next 12 presidents (FDR through George W. Bush) and the annual budget deficits and interest expenses that fed the national debt. The startup debt of each administration is shown; then the change in debt through the end of the administration is analyzed to show what areas of government incurred overspending and how much was overspent. Also included are brief biographies of each p

The national bestseller by the author of Defending the Spirit . In this powerful and controversial book, distinguished African-American political leader and thinker Randall Robinson argues for the restoration of the rich history that slavery and segregation severed. Drawing from research and personal experience, he shows that only by reclaiming their lost past and proud heritage can blacks lay the foundation for their future. And white Americans can make reparations for slavery and the century of racial discrimination that followed with monetary restitution, educational programs, and the kinds of equal opportunities that will ensure the social and economic success of all its citizens. In a book that is both an unflinching indictment of past wrongs and an impassioned call to our nation to educate all Americans about the history of Africa and its people, Robinson makes a persuasive case for the debt white America owes blacks, and the debt blacks owe themselves.

What, exactly, is the National Debt--and to whom do we owe the money--two trillion dollars worth? That's a pile of one thousand dollar bills 134 miles high, and climbing. Just paying the interest costs is equivalent to the entire federal income tax collected west of the Mississippi.   How did we get into such a fix? This book explains why the government, politicians of both parties, and all the rest of us have delayed putting our house in order; how Reaganomics delivered something very different from what it promised; how one devoted but nevertheless unelected public servant, Chairman Paul Volcker of the Federal Reserve Board, has been left to mind the store; how we turned into a net debtor to the rest of the world; how our economic destiny is increasingly determined by foreigners, and how the world's financial system could shiver around us as a result.   What are the constraints this unimaginable debt imposes on our society, what is the threat it poses to our political stability, and what does it mean to the individual American--not to mention almost everyone else in the world? Debt is a dilemma that will not go away, despite Washington's attempts to persuade us otherwise. At some point something may snap, and this book suggests when that breaking point might come. Lawrence Malkin, one of our most respected economics journalists, has written an eloquent, witty, fact-filled, and provocative treatise on what is becoming the great dilemma of this decade.

The National Debt? The Sinking of America is a nonfiction work that may appeal to readers who are interested in politics, current events, and the economy. It delves into our current economic state and how we got here through rampant scandals, hypocrisy of our elected officials, widespread corruption in Congress, and large sums of money wasted. The work then discusses the national debt at length, with the authoras insights on the mechanics of the national debt. This book magnifies the fact that the government uses smoke and mirrors to deceive the public on the seriousness of the situation. The national debt has grown tremendously over the generations and how that has impacted our standard of living. There are humorous and serious insightful solutions offered to solve the national debt problem. The work ends with encouraging Americans to ask more questions of elected officials and political candidates.

The Budget Deficit and National Debt analyzes and attempts to better understand the problems associated with the debt and deficit. The theme of this book parallels the Miller Centers primary focus on governance and the presidency. The president is a key actor in submitting, approving, and administrating the budget. Therefore, the study of debt and deficit is in keeping with the Miller Centers focus on governance and the presidency. The book is divided into four sections. The first section discusses the debt and deficit from a variety of political perspectives and ideological approaches. Three contributors, representing different schools of thought and professional backgrounds, provide separate frameworks for considering the budget and deficit. The first section contrasts liberal, conservative, and independent views and compares the effects of the deficit on federal and local governments. The second section provides an overview of the origins and growth of the deficit and its effect on the U.S. economy. The authors outline interaction among and competition between economic and political forces operating in the United States, and they debate the merits of deficit reduction proposals. The third section examines the economic and political ramifications of the deficit, reviewing tactical and strategic errors and their consequences. The book concludes with a discussion of the political struggle over controlling the deficit and chronicles the ambitions and rivalries of two key political figures Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich. Their dispute over the seven year balancedbudget plan had significant influence on the policies of debt and deficit. Author: Thompson, Kenneth W. Commonsense Conservative Views - Commonsense Solutions   by DS Holman

In many ways, we seem to have lost our way in the world. So many of our problems have been foreseen, that the directions in which we are headed seem so backwards it is hard to know how we got here. Some conservative views to ponder:

Oil - Since the Presidency of Jimmy Carter, we have as a nation worried about our dependency on foreign oil. Both parties have promised solutions, and both have failed us. We sit on huge oil reserves that would provide desperately needed jobs for unemployed Americans, and deprive the folks who hate us of our petrodollars. Yet we continue to make it harder and harder to produce our own oil, and spend millions of taxpayer dollars on unproven green technologies. Does this make sense?

Healthcare - The International Monetary Fund warned the nation of Greece that they must get out of the healthcare business in order to rescue their nation from bankruptcy. Our neighbor to the north, Canada, has tried universal healthcare with disastrous results for their nation and the health of its people. Massachusetts has seen healthcare costs soar out of sight using the same healthcare proposals that were passed into law by the Obama administration. And do I need to remind you of what TennCare has done to our state budget? In poll after poll the American people have expressed their dissatisfaction with the new healthcare plan, yet it looms over us, slowly being implemented. Why?

Our Border - Since the administration of Ronald Reagan, the American people have asked for a secure border. Since 9/11, it has clearly been an issue of national security, and our Constitution demands it! Yet the borders remain open, and the American taxpayer spends million and billions of dollars providing healthcare, prison space, education facilities (and on and on) for the illegals among us. Now as a result of our inattention to this problem, we see a raging drug war that is spilling over the border into American towns and cities. Why wasn't something done long ago, and why are we still doing nothing?

The Deficit - For years, politicians have worried about our national debt, and promised to rein in spending. Yet with a national debt approaching 13 TRILLION, every week we witness some new government program, financed with borrowed money launched to grow the government. President Obama decries the free spending ways of George Bush, yet his first budget was almost three times the highest spending of the Bush years. When almost 50 cents of every dollar is borrowed, why are we spending so much?

How hard would it be to drop the barriers to developing our own oil reserves, allow health insurance companies to compete for our business all across the nation, secure the border, and stop spending money we don't have? We could do all those things if we only had politicians with conservative views that would listen to us. It isn't that these problems are insurmountable. It is that powerful influences in Washington DC have a vested interest in keeping things the way they are...and they use our money to provide those wonderful TV commercials to make us think they care.

I, in my commonsense conservative views, think it is time we voted for the citizen legislator instead of the eggheads from Harvard and Yale with no experience, only academic theories. We need people who know how to solve problems, not raise money from special interests, whether those interest are unions or corporations. We need problem solvers from everyday walks of life, and not the same old political families with their carefully groomed heirs to their hereditary offices. We stand at a crossroads that will determine the future of our nation. We have more information at our fingertips than any generation before us ever had. If it is true that we get the politicians we deserve, I would phrase it a little differently. What do the future generations, our children and grandchildren deserve? It is now their future we are mortgaging. Choose wisely when you vote. THEIR future depends on it!
